I just got back from a wonderful luncheon where the Gulfport Rotarians were honoring first responders from the community. There were winners from the Gulfport Police and Fire Departments, Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, AMR, Harrison County Fire Services and the Harrison County Emergency Management Agency/E-911 Commission. Congratulations to all the winners, but I’ll concentrate on the last award.

My dad, Tom Hammack, was honored for his 30-plus years of work volunteering with the amateur radio operators at the Emergency Operations Center. They highlighted his work after Katrina, where he spent at least two solid weeks providing a crucial link to the outside world as all the other communications infrastructure collapsed. Dad did it even when he knew that his house had been heavily damaged in the storm, ignoring his personal well-being to help others. He’s always volunteered to help the public, from volunteer fire fighting and paramedic work to his ham radio efforts, rarely getting the recognition he so richly deserves.

I’ve always been proud of him and hope to be half the man he is. That would make me a damn fine person. I love him.

    Congratulations to your Dad.
How lucky are we to reach an age where we can actually appreciate our parents? I loved my Dad my entire life, but only as an adult did I actually realize what an awesome man he was.

    Savor it.
