Jozy! Jozy!

I’ve hinted at my soccer geekness before, but let me throw out an exciting bit from today’s English Premier League. Jozy Altidore made his debut with Hull City today. First time he played the ball, you saw a glimpse of potential overcome his sometimes raw soccer skills. Altidore’s first touch wasn’t a thing of beauty, but he lobbed a pass over a defenders head to set up the only goal in a 1-0 win over Bolton. He later missed a couple chances for goals of his own.

Altidore is young (just 19), but he’s a man. A little polish gained through playing regularly in the EPL would benefit the U.S. national team greatly. I haven’t been this excited about an American player since Landon Donovan and DaMarcus Beasley broke into the ranks.

Me neither. His work rate concerns me, but he’s a finisher, something the US hasn’t had in a while. Charlie Davies also impresses. US Soccer is improving at a rapid pace.
